Day/night cameras are colour cameras that, below a preset value of light, show black/white pictures only. |

| Standard lenses are designed for the visible spectrum. When used in the (near) infrared they produce an out of focus and blurry image even after re-adjusting the lens. The infrared corrected lenses have a fine resolution in near infrared area. |  |
| Brightness in a lens is indicated by the F-number. However the transmission factor is also important because of the large number of separate lens elements put together to create a lens. A special coating technology is necessary for increasing the transmission factor in the broad light band from visible to near infrared. |  |
Focusing point changes after zooming, when using varifocal lenses. Therefore, in this case, focusing operation must be made again, contrarily to what happens by using zoom lenses.
