What is progressive scan

Progressive scan means that the picture information is accumulated simultaneously and the output line-by-line   or sequentially, in non-interlace mode. The result is an image that, when captured with a fast speed shutter, has a full vertical and horizontal resolution.

Traditional interlace CCD cameras are only capable of capturing one field (1 frame = 2 fields), or half the vertical information, because the scan function breaks the integration period into two sequential field scans (in the 1st field the odd lines are scanned , in the 2nd field the even lines only). In dynamic image capture, when the second field of information is stored the subject already has moved. The result is a blurred image once the two scan periods are combined to create an interlaced picture. This is successfully eliminated with progressive scanning.

Progressive scan comes usually with electronic shuttering. Eventually, shutter speed is selected by varying the the portion of charge retained on a single picture element.

Progressive scan cameras free users from the constraints of traditional TV scanning, allowing full vertical frame electronic shuttering and a dynamic capture of images with a full vertical resolution. For instance, normal TV scanning systems are not applicable in the 1024 x 1024 and higher pixel formats.
