Day/night cameras are colour cameras that, below a preset value of light, show black/white pictures only. Some cameras can also "view" in full nightime darkness using an infrared illumination. However standard lenses cannot focus properly in the infrared area. These lenses which are especially designed for these camera types, eliminates the need to re-adjust the focus when shifting from colour to black/white.

Standard lenses are designed for the visible spectrum. When used in the (near) infrared they produce an out of focus and blurry image even after re-adjusting the lens. The infrared corrected lenses have a fine resolution in near infrared area.

Brightness in a lens is indicated by the F-number. However the transmission factor is also important because of the large number of separate lens elements put together to create a lens. A special coating technology is necessary for increasing the transmission factor in the broad light band from visible to near infrared.
